As the Ducks convoy left the pond behind and made their way through beautiful countryside and over the Chiltern hills towards Cholsey, the sun shone down on them all.
Once parked, the team hiked across the pitches to the furthest point where an eager home team awaited their arrival.
With two players adorned in new football boots-Frances Hook and Sophie Pymm, the team confidently warmed up and strode out onto the pitch. There was no holding back, as the Ducklington girls took possession of the ball and started the game with confidence and their true professional colours shone through.
With tactical moves and real team effort they kept their supporters entertained.
Within the first 5 minutes Lauren major had two shots at goal only to go wide of the left hand corner and skim past the goal. Keeping Cholsey’s keeper on her toe’s Lauren decided in minute 6 to have another shot, hit the post and the ball deflected to the right hand side of the goal.
In minute 8 it was Sophie Pymms turn for a shot which was saved by Cholsey’s keeper.
It was now time for the Bluebirds to have possession, but with Emily Gee, Katie Weaving and Ella Butler all doing really great tackle’s they struggled to get near the goal but with real determination they battled on and had several shots, which to their disappointment were saved by the ever alert Viv Hughes.
With the ball at her feet, running up the right wing, the Bluebirds defender was closed down by Frances Hook, who then took the ball from her. With the ball in the air, Ella saw her chance for a header and rose to the occasion, only to have the ball skim the top of her highlighted head and fall to the feet of the Birds once again! They ran, determinedly up the pitch and had a shot at goal which was saved by Viv’s nimble fingers.
In Minute 15, Sophie Pymm saw a chance, ran with the ball at her feet, and made a beautiful cross to Frances who managed to Hook the ball into the goal mouth!! 1-0 to the Ducks!
These new boots were really moulding to their players feet! With great tackles and defending from Abbi Lloyd and Katy Hoare the Ducklington girls really showed their true potential. Katy closed down a Bluebirds striker as she ran towards goal with a heart stopping moment as the supporters, with baited breath, sighed with ooh’s and ahh’s!
As the Bluebirds took a corner, it was time for Holly Keylock to take the ball at her feet and save it from going into the goal mouth. With great runs from Lauren Major and Laura Jones and some superb passing between Sophie and Katie Weaving,
1 minute to half time saw Sophie pass and find the feet of Laura, who banged the ball into the back of the net. 2-0 to the Ducks!!
Having devoured Mrs Jones’s special zooped up juicy oranges the players ran onto the pitch for the second half. Whether it was the energy from these delicious fruits or the power that sped across the fields and the Chiltern hills from Didcot Power Station into the legs if these super fit girls, they certainly rose to the occasion and continued to perform wonders!
The ball rolled back and forth between the feet of Abbi and Lauren, and saw another great run from whippet Major. She took another fantastic shot at goal only to be saved once again. Another run from the Blues saw a goal saved by Viv. A corner for them saw Holly Keylock, determinedly stop it and pass the ball to the ever strong Katie Weaving. She passed to Lauren who crossed the ball to Laura Jones.
From the half way line Laura sped up the pitch leaving the Cholsey’s defender behind her, and with real precision, struck the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal net. 3-0 to the Ducks!!!
With Ducks defenders alert and ready, they won the ball again and with great runs and brilliant passing between Ella, Lauren and Laura, saw Ella Butler ker-ching the ball into the back of the net. …Wahey….4-0 to the Ducks!!!!
There was no stopping these Girls now and the Bluebirds and Ducklington players, full of frustration , determination and wilfulness, played a superb game of quality class football, running from one end of the pitch to the other.
With many more saves from Viv and great tackles and defending from Abbi and Emily, the ball landed at the feet of Ella, who ran, skilfully dodging the Bluebirds and made a stupendous cross to Lauren, who then set up the goal for Laura Jones’s hat trick! Ker-ching!! 5-0 to the Ducks!!!!!
2 minutes later with this team well and truly bonded we saw Lauren yet again set up a superb goal for Laura….6-0 to the Ducks!!!!!!
With the game continuing to play with runs back and forth from one end of the pitch to the other, adrenalin rushing in torrents through the supporters and players alike, we saw Ella cross the ball to Sophie. With seconds to go before the referee blew his whistle Sophie deservedly gained the goal she had worked so hard and determinedly for, leaving the score as a 7-0 win to the Ducklington Girls!!!!!!!
Fantastic team effort Girls…you entertained the crowd with fun, determination and smiles!!
Player of the match was deservedly won by all team players for their skilful, bonded workmanship, however the trophy was quite rightly handed to Abbi for her confident 100% effort in today’s game.
